The European programme in Civil Society Leadership
This CINEFOGO initiative rests on three core assumptions: • That a network-community for European CSO decision makers is very incorrigible • That there is a need for an expansion of scholarly research addressing civil society related problems • That decision makers require tailor-made programmes based on networking, as well as teaching and training A network-community for European CSO decision makers is incorrigible for both strategic and integrative reasons. Trough politics, academia and business, a significant exchange already occurs on the European arena, however, although many current civil society related problems and issues call for wider ambitions, perspectives and co-operations across nations and organizations, extensive parts of Europe’s civil society activities are still restricted to particular nation-state contexts. As CSO’s are central partners and stakeholders in many important fields, for example social welfare, environmentalism and culture, the dissemination of leading academic knowledge must reach beyond politicians and other public actors at all levels. CSO decision makers and leaders are to be regarded a crucial target group for both CINEFOGO and other academic communities. The curriculum of the educational programme is centered on ideas of personal interaction and networking as well as teaching and training, with attention to the transfer of academic knowledge. The programme addresses relevant strategic and managerial issues facing CSO leaders and managers, and is designed to integrate theory and practice. Participants for example visit a selection of organizations and are presented with assignments. An important aspect is the mix of participants representing different organizations from various countries. The European Programme in Civil Society Leadership has already successfully been held in Stockholm (March 2009), Heidelberg (June 2009) and Vienna (Sept. 2009) and is to be held in Dublin as well (Nov. 2009). The vision is to strengthen the strategic and analytical capacity of European civil society organizations through the encounter between CSO leaders and scholars from a variety of academic disciplines.
