New Website dedicated to cars and CO2 emissions
A new Website dedicated to providing information on EU objectives in the field of reducing CO2 emissions from cars has recently been launched. It provides information on the various aspects of the overall strategy to meet international commitments to reducing global warming. This involves an overall 8% reduction for a range of gas emissions by 2008-2012, of which CO2 is the most important. Links from the Website are provided for the first two aspects of the overall strategy for CO2 emissions from cars which is described in terms of three pillars: - Environmental agreements with automobile manufacturers: deals with the commitment undertaken by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) to reduce CO2 from new passenger cars by 25% by the year 2008, and provides links to the text of the agreement and the related Commission communication; - The fuel-economy information scheme: describes a Commission proposal which would provide consumers with information on the fuel-economy of new cars; - General information on the potential of fiscal incentives to create market conditions that favour environmentally responsible purchasing practices. Information on a Commission proposal for the establishment of an independent monitoring system to monitor the average specific emissions of carbon dioxide from new passenger cars is also provided.
