The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) and Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) have recently signed an agreement to intensify research and development cooperation in a number of areas including nuclear fuel safety, control of nuclear activities and materials, reduction of nuclear waste and its toxicity, and analytical techniques in the nuclear chemistry field. The Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU), located in Karlsruhe, Germany, will be involved in the implementation of this agreement. Their mission is to provide scientific expertise on nuclear safety for the protection of society against risks associated with the handling and storage of radioactive elements. They serve as a reference centre for basic research on the structure and behaviour of nuclear elements and contribute to the safety and control system for the nuclear fuel cycle, and develop technological and medical applications of nuclear activities. KAERI, the Korean national research institute for nuclear energy, are involved in activities ranging from nuclear core technologies to the transfer of highly developed technologies to local industry for practical applications. KAERI also supports the Korean Government in regulatory and licensing activities. The cooperation provided for in the agreement will take place via special collaborative contracts, secondments and/or exchange of staff.
