CORDIS Express: Food security and sustainable agriculture

This week’s edition of CORDIS Express takes a look at the work that EU-funded researchers are undertaking in the areas of food and agriculture.

As the world’s population grows, the question of how we are going to maintain an adequate, healthy and sustainable supply of food for all becomes an ever more pressing one. The challenge is indeed great - according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) by effect of demographic growth and changes in diets and incomes, demand for food is likely to grow by 70 % until 2050. That’s why food security and sustainable agriculture are among the societal challenges addressed by the Horizon 2020 programme, and are a key focus of ongoing research efforts. Horizon 2020 aims for research activities in these areas to help tackle three main challenges: securing viable food production in face of a growing world food demand; ensuring sustainable management of natural resources and climate action; and finally to contribute to a balanced territorial development of the EU’s rural areas and their communities. Research and innovation funded under Horizon 2020 will also address the competitiveness of the European agri-food industry, covering the whole food chain and related services from primary production to consumption. Research activities addressing the complexity of this food and agriculture challenge are ongoing. This week’s edition of CORDIS Express takes a look at the work that EU-funded researchers are undertaking, as well as related news and events. - Smarter farming: Call for innovative agricultural apps(opens in new window) - Developing soil management strategies for every corner of Europe(opens in new window) - Trending science: Wild bees threatened by virus from commercial bees(opens in new window) - Modelling climate impacts on crops and pests(opens in new window) - IDF Seventh International Symposium on Sheep, Goat and other non-Cow Milk(opens in new window) - The pick of the crop(opens in new window) - Dynamic aspects of biodiversity management of Quinoa(opens in new window)
