CORDIS Express: When science and the arts collide…

This edition of CORDIS Express takes a look at a selection of EU-funded research projects that are also making their mark on the arts.

Technological developments have certainly spurred exciting exploration and restoration projects on existing pieces of art work. However, science and the arts don’t just work together on preserving or restoring old masterpieces, now more than ever before they are colliding to develop new solutions and new creations. For example, artists are using technology like 3-D printers to create sculptors and utilising multi-media technology in installations. Many have embraced the power of the Internet for cultivating audiences, crowd-funding and drawing inspiration. By using ICT as their medium of expression, artists are able to prototype solutions, create new products and make new economic, social and business models. The European Commission recognises this and has launched the Starts programme(opens in new window): Innovation at the nexus of Science, Technology and the Arts. The idea is to foster the emergence of joint arts and research communities. We also see the important role that science can play in developing artistic tools and techniques and conserving treasures from the past. This edition of CORDIS Express takes a look at a selection of EU-funded research projects that are also making their mark on the arts using ICT solutions and others, as well as related news. - Materials monitoring for art and beyond(opens in new window) - Technique in the Arts.
