CORDIS Express: The power of the nanowire!

How are nanowires boosting research results? And how are EU-funded researchers advancing our knowledge of nanowires and their applications? CORDIS Express explores the power of the nanowire!

Available in a variety of forms, including metallic, semiconducting and insulating, and applicable in areas from energy and electronics to environmental protection, nanowires are a tool of choice for boosting many EU-funded research results. And their amazing length-to-width ratio – they have a lateral size of tens of nanometres or less but an unconstrained longitudinal size – compounds their unique appeal for researchers. For example, the NWS4LIGHT project, which concluded in May, used nanowire technology to overcome the performance and efficiency barriers associated with current planar nitride-based LEDs for lighting applications. Meanwhile, the EU-funded UNIVSEM project has developed a unique tool that enables scientists to carry out numerous nanoscale measurements in one go. This could help further advances in the field of silver nanowires (AgNWs). These nanowires can form a transparent conductive network, and thus are a promising candidate for solar cell contacts or transparent layers in displays. This edition of CORDIS Express takes a look at these EU-funded results and others as well as related news. - Technology to tap more solar energy(opens in new window) - Better light-emitting diodes for lighting applications(opens in new window) - European-made low-cost flexible displays(opens in new window) - Providing a clearer picture of nanotechnology’s full potential(opens in new window) - Trending science: Lund makes strides in brain research(opens in new window)
