Press Alert: Innovation Declaration of the 2nd European Innovation Summit by Knowledge4Innovation Platform

Brussels, 04 November 2010 – “Innovation is our best means of successfully tackling major societal challenges, such as climate change, energy and resource scarcity, health and ageing, which are becoming more urgent by the day”, says the European Commission in the Innovation Union Proposal published on 6 October 2010.

It was the task of stakeholders from all over Europe and beyond to explore and define the role of innovation in tackling these challenges at the 2nd European Innovation Summit in the European Parliament from 11-12 October 2010. The Knowledge4Innovation (K4I) Forum of the European Parliament is now pleased to announce the launch of the “Innovation Declaration of the 2nd European Innovation Summit”, declaring the main messages that were filtered at the 2nd European Innovation Summit. Also as a response to the “Innovation Union” proposal by the Commission, the declaration contains K4I’s vision on how Europe can and should develop towards an Innovation Union through fostering partnership and cooperation among all stakeholders in the innovation eco-system. “Tackling the Grand Challenges – Policy meets Practice” I. We welcome and endorse the Commission’s radical and challenging proposals for the Innovation Union. II. Research and technology are major drivers of innovation. However, we stress that the innovation concept is much broader. III. We underline the need to stimulate the accessibility and exploitation of intellectual capital. IV. We believe that for the Innovation Union to succeed, member states and citizens must be fully engaged. V. We urge the European Parliament, and all other involved institutions to seize this opportunity and provide adequate financial means to drive innovation across Europe. VI. The Knowledge4Innovation Forum of the European Parliament is committed to: - Serve as a platform for debate on the future of innovation in Europe by bringing together policy makers and practitioners from all levels, and - Host a major policy debate on the progress of the Innovation Union in the framework of the annual European Innovation Summit. K4I President Jos Leijten assures that “K4I fully supports the Commission and all other actors in the field in making the Innovation Union a reality.” Chairman of the K4I Forum of the European Parliament Governing Board MEP Lambert van Nistelrooij: “K4I will stimulate new coalitions on innovation and create partnerships of universities, enterprises and public authorities in order to better align expertise, resources and policies at EU, national and regional level.” The Declaration also includes the main results of the 2nd European Innovation Summit on the role of innovation in a number of EU policy areas.
