The COST Transport Secretariat, located within the Directorate General for Transport of the European Commission, has published the proceedings of the launch seminar of the Action COST 332, concerning transport and land-use policies. The seminar took place in Barcelona, Spain on 24-25 October 1996. The report is called "Transport and Land-use Policies: Resistance and Hopes for Coordination". Its main objective was to create a common body of theoretical and empirical references aimed at facilitation the Group's work on "institutional means of coordination between transport projects and regional planning" in order to improve the basis for future work within the Action. The document is divided into three parts. Firstly, it gives information on what is at stake and the difficulties of coordinating public action. It uses bibliographic analysis and includes the opinions of geographers, planners, political analysts and sociologists. Secondly, it gives an inventory of national approaches to mechanism for coordination between transport and planning. Finally, it presents some of the case studies on which future work will be based. The views expressed in the publication do not necessarily reflect the views of the European Commission.
