Destination Turkey: Funding Opportunities for Brain Circulation, R&D Cooperation and Research Career

The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) organized two workshops on "Destination Turkey: European and National Funding Opportunities for Brain Circulation, R&D Cooperation and Research Career" in cooperation with the European Commission (EC) and National Science Foundation (NSF) on November 30, 2010, in Boston, Massachusetts and on December 2, 2010, in Ann Arbor.

The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) organized two workshops on “Destination Turkey: European and National Funding Opportunities for Brain Circulation, R&D Cooperation and Research Career” in cooperation with the European Commission (EC) and National Science Foundation (NSF) on November 30, 2010, in Boston, Massachusetts and on December 2, 2010, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. The events aimed at increasing awareness on the researchers’ mobility funds of TÜBİTAK and Marie Curie Actions under the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union for research and technological development (FP7) as well as research collaboration between Europe and the USA. Almost 300 Turkish researchers, who have been conducting research and education activities in major universities of the world like Harvard and MIT, attended to the workshops organized in Boston and Ann Arbor. The event aimed at creating awareness on Career Integration Grants (International Reintegration Grants) as well as International Incoming Fellowships of the FP7 Marie Curie Actions and TÜBİTAK programmes by gathering researchers of any nationality carrying out any kind of research in the US. The workshop series targeted researchers who are not informed about FP7 Marie Curie Actions as well as TUBITAK funds and aimed at increasing their awareness on mobility towards Europe. Successful brain circulation requires not only brains but also suitable hosting institutions to attract the top-quality researchers. Hence, almost 20 public and private Turkish hosting organizations were present at the workshops in order to reflect the research climate in Turkey to the researchers who haven’t been in Turkey for a long time. While many representatives from significant Turkish universities have underlined the current developing research and development capacities of Turkey; some of the largest Turkish industrial organizations and enterprises have informed the researchers on new R&D opportunities available in their corporations. The researchers who have attended the workshop stated that they have had good impressions about the current level of Turkey’s research potential and the amount of R&D funds allocated to researchers in Turkey. Researchers participating to the workshops found the chance to learn the opportunities under Marie Curie Actions and TÜBİTAK mobility funds from TUBITAK and European Commission representatives. Career Integration Grant of the FP7 Marie Curie Actions provide a flat rate contribution to the researchers and support up to 4 years to contribute to the research costs. International Incoming Fellowship covers all living, mobility and training expenses of the researchers during research project lifetime. TÜBİTAK reintegration grants provide flat rate contribution to the Turkish researchers who have completed their PhD studies up to 2 years. During the workshops, these research funding opportunities has been presented to the participants from both descriptive and practical perspectives. (Presentations delivered during the workshops are attached below) The researchers who had returned to Turkey via benefiting from these programmes, have also shared their experiences with the participants. They pointed out that the developments on Turkey’s R&D activities have been on the rise in recent years. While they notably have identified that thanks to this organization they are encouraged to carry on their research activities in Turkey, they also set forth TUBITAK has a significant role on that. Furthermore, National Science Foundation of the US delivered a speech in a specific session of each workshop on the advancement of international research relations and collaboration between the two continents. Please find below the presentations delivered during the workshops and contact with ncpmobility@tubitak.gov.tr for furthrer information. http://www.fp7.org.tr/home.do?ot=5&rt=10&sid=0&pid=0&cid=20549(s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)
