LifeWatch construction kicks off on January 19th

Representatives from Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, in addition to 4 other European countries will meet today at the University of Amsterdam Science Park to sign a document formalizing the construction of the infrastructure for biodiversity research called LifeWatch.

LifeWatch will construct and bring into operation the facilities, hardware, software and governance structures for all aspects of biodiversity research. It will consist of: -facilities for data generation and processing; -a network of observatories; -facilities for data integration; -interoperability; -virtual laboratories offering a range of analytical and modelling tools; -a Service Centre providing special services for scientific and policy users, including training and research opportunities for young scientists. LifeWatch is supporting users by introducing tools for a new methodology in fast analysis and modelling of large-scale databases to tackle the big basic and applied questions in biodiversity research. The infrastructure has the support of all major European biodiversity research networks. Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain announced to commit for annual investments into LifeWatch and are the “founding fathers” of the European infrastructure. 4 other countries, Finland, Greece, Romania and Sweden, have signed a Memorandum of Intent in which they confirm their support to LifeWatch. ESFRI, the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures, identified LifeWatch as an essential facility to be developed by all European countries. LifeWatch started its preparatory phase in 2008 and has since then been paving the way towards the establishment of the infrastructure by the countries themselves. LifeWatch will be one of the very first European Research Infrastructure Consortia (ERIC), a new legal entity developed for pan-European infrastructures. It will be governed by the Member States in a General Assembly.
