"What is Europe doing? The threat of natural disasters" is a new on-line publication, produced by the European Commission, DG XII, available on the World Wide Web. It details how the European Commission is involved on the research front with respect to natural disasters. The publication has an introduction by Edith Cresson, the European Commissioner responsible for research, innovation, education, training and youth. It is divided into sections on storms and floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and forest fires. For each section, a case study is given to highlight facts about the causes of natural disasters, alongside explanations of what the European Union is doing to try to prevent tragedies arising from them.
