Academia Europea announces the 2011 Erasmus Award
The Erasmus Medal of the Academia Europaea, is awarded on the recommendation of the Council, to a scholar who has maintained over a sustained period, the highest level of international scholarship and recognition by peers. Professor Castells will also deliver the 2011 Heinz-Nixdorf Erasmus Lecture at the opening of the Annual conference of the Academia Europaea, to take place at UNESCO HQ in Paris on 21 September: The Lecture title is: “Communication Power: the Interface between Neural Networks and Digital Networks” Manuel Castells (Barcelona and California) Is the fifth most cited social scientist (Social Science Citation Index) in the world in comparison to a group of 20 leading scholars that includes many of the best known living social scientists. His trilogy “The Information Age: Economy, Society, and Culture”, published by Blackwell in 1996-2000, and translated in 21 languages, has been praised as the most comprehensive work on the transformation of society by the revolution in information and communication technologies. His empirical studies on the interaction between Internet, mobile communication and society have provided a systematic understanding of the new communication environment of social practices in a global perspective. His recent book, “Communication Power” (Oxford University Press, 2009) already translated in 5 languages, investigates the relationship between media, Internet, and politics, and explores the connection between discoveries in neuroscience and in political communication.
