Industrial Market Survey for the development of a low-cost Interactive Graphical Tactile Display

We are working on a research project entitled TACMON funded by the European Commission for the benefit of associations such as LEBIC/EUREX.

The objective of the TACMON project is to develop an innovative low-cost tactile display technology. This technology will facilitate translation of electronic graphical information and/or Braille text for the touch sense on an electronically refreshable surface. Our proposed technology simultaneously aims at providing a low cost alternative to current technologies thus enabling a wider range of possibilities for companies, developers and end-users who might benefit from finally having an affordable tactile interface solution which departs from simple Braille translation and delivers graphical and proportional representations of current monitor images. TACMON is based on a novel miniaturized pneumatic – mechanical hybrid actuator. The TACMON technology enables an actual mechanical deformation, so called actuation of the surface, reaching amplitudes of up to 0.5 mm providing at a force of about 0.25 N. The resolution of the tactile actuator matrix can be as high as 12 dots per inch in both directions. The refresh rate for the displayed tactile information is around 1 second. With this technology, large tactile areas can be produced at relatively low costs. The TACMON project initially developed this technology for the application field of assistive technologies addressing the visually impaired with a graphical tactile display. A preliminary market study conducted in 2009 already proved that the market is wider than the primarily targeted field and this kind of actuator technology can be tailored to a great number of other potential applications. We would now like to specify the range of applicable domains which could derive benefit out of using the mentioned technology. We would be very grateful if you could take a few minutes to share your opinion with us about the usefulness of this technology in your respective sectors. This information would enable us to further develop the TACMON technology closer to your real needs. Please return the completed questionnaire to the below address either by email, fax or snail post. Thank you for your participation in the survey! Should you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us!
