With the launch of the Fifth Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration, Directorate General XIII is adapting its scope and structure, as reflected in its new official name - Information Society: Telecommunications, Markets, Technologies - Innovation and Exploitation of Research.

Within FP5, DG XIII is responsible for carrying out the specific programme devoted to the User-Friendly Information Society, which will focus on four key actions:

- Systems and services for the citizen;
- New methods of work and electronic commerce;
- Multimedia content and tools;
- Essential technologies and infrastructures.
