€1.5m European Commission funding for CREATE-NET supports development of future 5G network infrastructures
These projects are among the 19 projects that received research funding within the 5G Public-Private Partnership initiative (5G PPP), initiated by the European Commission, that will deliver solutions and technologies for the ubiquitous next generation mobile communications infrastructures, and is spearheaded by leading European vendors, IT companies and Telco operators. CREATE-NET will participate in three R&D projects which targets innovation at different levels of the 5G infrastructure, ranging from the design of the 5G network architectures meeting multi-service and multi-tenancy requirements to the development of novel network management and control frameworks that leverage software-centric networking techniques including network virtualization, software-defined networking and mobile edge computing. A short summary of the three projects that CREATE-NET is involved is provided in the following: • The XHAUL project will define and develop the next generation of integrated fronthaul and backhaul networks that will respond to the needs of the future 5G communications system. With respect to the proposed technologies, the project will include the appropriate mix of wired and wireless solutions operating as a common packet based transport network under an SDN-based (Software Defined Network) and NFV-enabled (Network Function Virtualization) common control. This solution will hence enable a flexible and software-defined reconfiguration of all networking elements in a multi-tenant and service-oriented unified management framework. • The SESAME project will design and demonstrate virtualised, cloud-enabled, multi-operator, frequency agile, 5G-oriented radio access and services. The project targets innovations around the three central elements of 5G: network intelligence through Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) and Mobile Edge Cloud Computing, substantial evolution of the Small Cell concept to create targeted coverage and capacity, and the consolidation of multi-tenancy in mobile network infrastructure; allowing several operators and service providers to engage in new sharing models. • The COHERENT project will develop common interfaces and software-development kits to enable programmability in controlling and coordinating heterogeneous 5G mobile networks. The programmable control will provide mobile operators with a flexible and cost efficient way to implement new control functions and to support novel services. The project will showcase true proof-of-concept prototypes to demonstrate the applicability and benefits of its approach, and contribute to the pre-standardization of 5G networks. “CREATE-NET is at the forefront in developing cutting-edge technological innovations for Telco industries since its inception and the involvement in the 5G public-private partnership provides us an excellent platform to drive innovation, developed in Trentino, to a global scale. This is a recognition to our focus on excellence in research and technology development over the past 10 years” says Dr. Elio Salvadori, Director or Research at CREATE-NET. “The current mobile network architectures with dedicated hardware and dedicated spectrum, is not scalable and is reaching its limits” says Dr. Tinku Rasheed, the Area Head of Future Networks at CREATE-NET. “The 5G research program is an exciting opportunity for us to support the development of a software-centric network vision for the future 5G cellular systems built based on our expertise in the areas of network virtualization, software-defined networking and network functions virtualization.
