Information on how the European Commission supports non-governmental organisations (NGOs) engaged in environmental work is now available at Directorate General XI's website, The EC makes financial contributions to environmental NGOs to provide support for the inherent costs of their work on environmental protection in Europe. The website provides information on funding, calls for proposals (in English and French) and contact details for more detailed information. It is also linked to a guide which demonstrates how to present a proposal for funding, as well as a list of the organisations and projects funded under this initiative in 1997. (This includes a number of well-known organisations, such as the Dutch group Seas at Risk, and Friends of the Earth, Europe.) To qualify for financial support, organisations have to be independent and non-profit making. They must also operate at a European level and have an environmental objective aimed to the public's benefit.
