Meeting in the European Parliament on R&D collaboration between the Arab Peninsula and the EU

A meeting on “Science Diplomacy with the Arab Peninsula” will be held by Angelika Niebler, MEP and Chair of the Delegation for relations with the Arab Peninsula, on Tuesday, 22 November from 11.30 to 13.00 in the European Parliament. At the meeting the possibilities for R&D collaboration in biological and medical science between the Arab Peninsula and the European Union will be explored.

The meeting will include discussions with Dr Husam Al Ulama, Dr Kenneth Wilson (both United Arab Emirates National Research Foundation) and Prof Sehamuddin Galadari (Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies, United Arab Emirates University) concerning the potential scope of R&D cooperation in health policy. Research infrastructures can be key opportunity to bring science capability and global standards setting in medical sciences. Therefore Prof Kurt Zatloukal (Medical University of Graz) will address cooperation in the biological and medical sciences, with a particular emphasis on the Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure and the IT Future of Medicine (ITFoM) pilot project as examples of potential collaboration. The purpose of the meeting is to identify an adequate format for scientific dialogue and cooperation between the Arab Peninsula and the EU within the context of the broader EU-GCC cooperation following the European Parliament Resolution of 24 March 2011 on “European Union relations with the Gulf Cooperation Council”. The Resolution “highlights the importance of deepening bilateral cooperation with the GCC on research and technology programmes, with special focus on new knowledge-based industries in areas such as renewable sources, CCS, oil and gas derivatives, energy efficiency and biomass; calls for the establishment of cooperation involving the transfer of technologies combined with a secure, sustainable supply of raw materials.” More information and registration: http://www.iscintelligence.com/event.php?id=44(opens in new window) Agenda: • Introduction Declan Kirrane, Director, Intelligence in Science • Cooperation between the EU and the Arab Peninsula in Health R&D Dr Kenneth Wilson, United Arab Emirates National Research Foundation Dr Husam Al Ulama, United Arab Emirates National Research Foundation Prof Sehamuddin Galadari, Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies, United Arab Emirates University • An Example for Potential Cooperation: Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure Prof Kurt Zatloukal, Medical University of Graz, BBMRI Coordinator
