Strategic partnership euroCRIS and VIVO

euroCRIS, a not-for-profit scientific association registered in the Netherlands, and the leaders of the project team of VIVO, an open source Semantic Web software application originally developed at Cornell University, have entered into a strategic partnership.

euroCRIS, a not-for-profit scientific association registered in the Netherlands, and the leaders of the project team of VIVO, an open Semantic Web software application originally developed at Cornell University, have entered into a strategic partnership. euroCRIS is furthering the implementation and linking of Current Research Information Systems (CRIS) based on the Common European Research Information Format (CERIF) – commonly indicated with the acronym CERIF-CRIS – and promotes best practice in CRISs, spanning the field from raw experimental and simulated data through research management systems to research publications. CERIF-CRIS also plays an instrumental role in advancing the accessibility of institutional repositories. euroCRIS is custodian of CERIF, which is an EU recommendation to the member states. VIVO is based on the Semantic Web / Linked Open Data concept. It is used in many universities in the USA and has attracted interest more widely internationally. Recent development has been supported by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, U24 RR029822, through a consortium of universities led by the University of Florida and including Cornell University, Indiana University, Ponce School of Medicine, The Scripps Research Institute, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and Weill Cornell Medical College. euroCRIS and VIVO propose to structure the cooperation in three aspects: • Interoperation and convergence of semantics in the two systems; • Interoperation of the systems to allow homogeneous access over heterogeneous research information systems; • Exploring utilising the VIVO user interface for researchers as a ‘front-end’ to the CERIF research information storage environment. This partnership will further facilitate a diverse collection of activities associated with the VIVO project, across federal agencies, professional societies, data providers, and a variety of efforts with the Semantic Web and ontology development communities. Exploring the interoperabilities between the activities of euroCRIS and VIVO will also serve to enhance the efforts at VIVO implementations across the United States and around the world as scholars look to share their research efforts and promote their expertise. euroCRIS President, Professor Keith G. Jeffery, said: “this partnership brings together leaders of two major approaches to making interlinked information on research available.
