Functionalization of polymeric materials by biomolecules from marine origin

Along its 3 years duration the GIMs project (Green Intelligent Materials) has developed new barriers materials with biocide and antibiofilm activity.

The antimicrobial activity is held by natural molecules extracted from green seaweeds The followed strategies have permitted the functionalization of polymeric materials by marine biomolecules, in order to modify the interactions between micro-organisms and these polymer surfaces. Efficient results, such as antiviral masks against pathogenic bacteria, have been achieved. They open promising applications in the field of biomaterials or packaging in particular for the cosmetics sector. This trans-Channel Centre is composed of the University of Rouen, the CNRS, the engineer school INSA de Rouen, the University of Portsmouth (School of Biological Sciences) and the Biofilm Control Company. The GIMs project received the support of the European Commission through the INTERREG IVA programme. More details are available at: www.interreg-gims.eu/
