EU will promote energy cooperation with China
The European Commission (EC) is ready to promote international energy cooperation and contacts between the European Union (EU) and China, including industry, the financial sector and decision makers, according to Christos Papoutsis, the European Commissioner responsible for energy, enterprise policy, Euratom supply agency and tourism. He said the third conference on EU-China energy cooperation in Brussels on 4 and 5 March 1999 was an opportunity for consolidating existing links and establishing new ones. The conference also provided an opportunity for an update on recent developments in the energy sector with respect to commercial, institutional and regulatory aspects, Commissioner Papoutsis said. He underlined the importance of increasing the level of dialogue between the EU and China and reinforcing mutual understanding to allow energy policy to develop harmoniously across the world. This, Commissioner Papoutsis said, will facilitate the conditions for an expanded presence of European companies in China to the mutual benefit of both China and the EU.
