The European Parliament approved, at the Strasbourg session on 11 March 1999, a proposal to lay down a number of guidelines relating to Trans-European Networks in the energy field with a number of technical amendments. On the same day, MEPs also approved two multi-annual programmes related to energy. The first, which focuses on renewable energy, will run from 1998 to 2002 with a number of amendments emphasising the importance of renewables in contributing to cleaning up the environment. The second is designed to promote energy efficiency and has a number of amendments emphasising the need to support energy programmes that result in reduced pollution. Also, on the same day, a resolution calling on the Commission to give priority to energy-efficient programmes in future energy projects was approved without amendment.
