WoodWisdom-Net Success Stories – Timber Window ReWin

Since 1.5.2014 the company M SORA d.d. in Slovenia is working in a large international project titled “Cascading Recovered Wood (CaReWood)”, the project being coordinated by the Technical University of Munich. Public funding for the project is provided by national funding bodies and the European Commission within the frame of the ERA-NET Plus initiative WoodWisdom-Net+. As a result of this collaboration, M SORA has developed a prototype of a timber window ReWin made of disposed timber windows.

(27 Jan 2016) Timber windows in most cases end up at landfills after the end of their lifetime. If materials of these windows are not used for new products or processed, there is a negative impact on the environment. In addition to this, it is important to know that wood in the disposed windows is still healthy, of good quality and suitable for further use. Since 1.5.2014 the company M SORA d.d. in Slovenia has been working in a large international project titled “Cascading Recovered Wood (CaReWood)”, the project being coordinated by the Technical University of Munich. Public funding for the project is provided by national funding bodies and the European Commission within the frame of the ERA-NET Plus initiative WoodWisdom-Net+. Participating project partners come from Germany, Austria, Finland, France and Slovenia. The project, lasting for 3 years (2014-2017), will see intensive work on the recycling of wood after its normal lifespan with special emphasis on wooden windows. As a result of this collaboration, M SORA has developed a prototype of a timber window ReWin made of disposed timber windows which were even 50 years old. Window scantlings, from which the ReWin window is made, are produced of spruce and larch wood. ReWin window is a unique example of a product that was developed by recycling the disposed timber windows that would otherwise end up at landfill, and represents a completely fresh idea and innovation in the field of builders’ joinery. The timber window ReWin was honoured for the best innovation with a social impact at the 10th Slovenian Innovation Forum 2015 in Nova Gorica. Furthermore, M SORA has been actively participating in a number of international projects and the company has been awarded for several other window products such as: Timber window WINTHERWAX – Award for environmentally friendly product 2015 (Environment conference 2015, Ljubljana), Timber window Nature Optimo XLT – 1. prize for component award in the category wood (Component awards 2014, Passivehaus conference 2014), and Timber-aluminium window Comfort E92 – Green Mission prize 2011 (Fair DOM, Ljubljana).
