Intelligent manufacturing systems are the subject of a European Commission call for proposals under the Fifth Framework Programme (FP5) for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration (RTD) activities for the period 1998 to 2002. The call invites proposals for RTD actions under the specific programmes for RTD 'User-friendly information society' and 'Competitive and sustainable growth' on intelligent manufacturing systems (IMS) (Call identifier: [IMS].) The indirect actions referred to in the call notice correspond to those described in the work programmes and the technical themes for international cooperation on IMS which have been defined in the Council Decision of 27 January 1997 on IMS as follows: - Total product life-cycle issues; - Process issues; - Strategy / planning / design; - Human / organisational / social issues; - Virtual / extended enterprise issues. The call relates to proposals called under a continuous submission scheme, under which, proposals are evaluated at fixed intervals for which deadlines for receipt are provided. Those eligible to participate in indirect RTD actions under the specific programmes are invited to submit proposals that address the work programme of the specific programme 'Competitive and sustainable growth' and/or the following action lines of the work programme of the specific programme 'User-friendly information society': - II.1.1: New perspectives for work and business; - II.2.1: Workplace; - II.2.2: Team work; - II.2.3: Dynamic networked organizations; - II.3.1: Digital design and life-cycle management for products and services; - II.3.2: New market-mediation systems; - II.3.3: Enhanced consumer-supplier relationships; - II.4.2: Secure electronic financial transactions. The call also includes the IMS themes mentioned above. The indicative budget for IMS for each specific programme is 35 million euro from 1999 to 2001, from which 5 million euro are foreseen by each programme for 1999.
