A device with eight sensors that monitors temperature, pressure, sound, smell and three wavelengths of light has been developed by the TEA (Technology for enabling awareness) project under the ESPRIT programme. The information obtained with these sensors can be used to predict the user's location and activity as well as generate a dynamic profile of user-place-activity. The prototype can even determine if the user is in the car, at the office or out jogging. Even though the GSM mobile phone networks can determine your approximate location, it has no means of knowing your current activity. The idea is that TEA technology could be used to make context-sensitive adjustments to the way mobile devices operate. For example, in a crowded area the telephone could be made to ring loudly; in a conference a quiet buzz or vibration might be more appropriate. However, if the call is very urgent, the telephone could be made to ring with an appropriate signal.
