The European Commission has announced a call for proposals under the Fifth Framework Programme (FP5) for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration (RTD) activities for the period 1998 to 2002. The call invites proposals for indirect RTD actions under the specific programme for RTD on "Energy, environment and sustainable development (1998 to 2002)". It is the second call under Part B of the Programme, calling for work related to energy, under Key Actions 5 and 6 of the Programme. The call texts, together with all the documentation necessary to make a proposal, are accessible via: URL:http://cordis.europa.eu/eesd/calls/calls.htm The call relates to proposals called by a fixed deadline, following which evaluation will not take place. Those eligible to participate in indirect RTD actions (shared cost actions, concerted actions and Thematic Networks) under the specific programme, are invited to submit proposals that address the following parts of the work programme. - Key Action 5: "Cleaner Energy Systems, including Renewable Energies": - - Large scale generation of electricity and/or heat with reduced CO2 emissions from coal, biomass and other fuels, including combined heat and power: - - - More energy-efficient gas turbines; - - - Optimization of CHP systems; - Key Action 6: "Economic and Efficient Energy for a Competitive Europe": - - Technologies for the rational and efficient end use of energy: - - - Transport combustion optimization with cleaner hydrocarbon and alternative transport fuels; - - Technologies for the transmission and distribution of energy: - - - Assuring electric power flow reliability and stability and increasing power line efficiency; - - - Interconnection and load shaping; - - - More efficient and safer transport of gas; - - - Cost-effective heating and cooling distribution; - - Technologies for the storage of energy on both macro and micro scale: - - - Optimising power quality, by means of energy storage, for stand-alone renewable and hybrid systems and for transport; - - - Stability-related electrical energy storage; - - - Safer, lighter and more energy-efficient gas storage; - - - Reliable high-capacity microstorage; - - More efficient exploration, extraction and production technologies for hydrocarbons: - - - Cost-effective and more efficient exploration and production of hydrocarbons; - - - Deepwaters, marginal fields and new frontiers including Arctic. The indicative budget available for Key Actions 5 and 6 is 220 million euro. When submitting a proposal for an RTD project, a demonstration project, a combined project or a concerted action, proposers may include an application for a "Bursary for young researchers from Developing Countries". Further information on this scheme is given in the Guide for Proposers. Information on the rules for participation in the Programme and how to prepare and submit proposals is given in the European Commission's Guide for Proposers, which can be obtained, along with the work programme and other information relating to the call, from the address below.
