The European Commission (EC), Directorate-General XIII, has published a prior information notice relating to work in the area of the action "Application for education" of the thematic programme "User-friendly Information Society" (IST) which forms part of the EC's Fifth Framework Programme (FP5) for Research, Technological development and Demonstration (RTD).

The Commission estimates that the award procedures for each category within this area will begin from 15 May 1999.

The budget set aside for each of the service categories listed in Annex IA in this notice is 1.6 million euro.

The contract covers three distinct lots within the framework of the accompanying measures of the area of the action "Application for education" of the IST programme. These include:

- Awareness and dissemination of the results and products of the education action area of the research programme "User-friendly Information Society";
- Standardization of learning technologies (support for the "Memorandum of understanding" on multimedia access for education and training in Europe);
- Analysis of the development of technologies, market, and teaching methods for the applications in the fields of education and training.
