A management system with translation capabilities will help users improve their competition skills, reduce the cost of their processes and improve the quality of their result. It is currently being developed under the European Commission's MLIS (Multilingual Information Society) Programme. Entitled MANDES, the main objective of this project is to demonstrate and evaluate the effective integration of information and telecommunication technologies in the working environment of language-service suppliers. It aims to realise the MANDES environment and integrate it within the users' environment. The system will provide an integrated multilingual document-management method involving state-of-the-art database technology for storing the multilingual documents, terminology files and on-line dictionaries. Additionally, it will involve a translation memory programme to accelerate the translation process as well as advanced document editing and layout facility that will be customized for specific needs. Evaluating the translation and multilingual documentation process of user partners has identified problems. This provides the rationale for the proposed system that will address the lack of an integrated and computer-aided workflow for the language service suppliers, particularly for integrated technical documentation and translation. After demonstration and evaluation of the MANDES system, user partners will train sufficient personnel to use it effectively. Furthermore, the project will continue to be enhanced further, for example by integrating a machine translator, and offering more functions for the efficient implementation of multilingual and multimedia CDs as well as HTML files for web browsers.
