Managing radioactive waste in the European Community
A booklet suitable for the non-specialist has been issued by DG XII (Science, Research and Development) of the Commission of the European Communities, describing how radioactive waste is managed in the Member States. One of the tasks included in the European Commission's specific research and technological development programme (Euratom) in the field of management and storage of radioactive waste (1990-1994) is the improvement of the public's information on radioactive waste management. The Council Resolution of 5.6.1992 on "A plan of action in the field of radioactive waste" (OJ No C 158 of 25.6.1992) also includes the provision of information, in particular to the general public, as one of the seven actions to be undertaken in this field. A limited number of copies of the booklet "Managing radioactive waste in the European Community" are at present in stock and may be provided free of charge to interested individuals and organizations. Additionally, a leaflet providing general information for the public on this subject, entitled "Managing Radioactive Waste" (first issued in "EC-FOCUS: Radioactive waste and nuclear fuel cycle", edition No 15 of November 1992) may now be obtained in the French, German and Dutch language versions, and also in English.
