The European Commission, DG XI, has recently published an open invitation to tender for a contract to cover the responsibilities of the secretariat of the European Environment Awards. The awards recognise companies that have introduced environmental practices that go beyond legal requirements. They are also intended as incentives for companies to improve their environmental policies and involve more stakeholders in this improvement. The Commission has been presenting the European Environment Awards since 1987 and the scheme is supported by a system of national awards that are organised by independent partners in the 15 Member States. The role of the secretariat is to adapt the organisational structure of the European environmental awards, ensure that the award categories reflect current trends in business development and environmental policies, and make the awards widely know within the European business community and the media. The tasks of the secretariat are described in more detail in the official call text, along with details of the Commission's selection criteria.
