The European Commission has published a call for tenders to set up a computer-based method and user-guide to assess radiation doses to air crew. This should enable the competent authorities in any Member State and airline companies to calculate the radiation doses to crew members during individual flights. It should be based on calculated route doses taking into account flight profiles, the solar cycle modulations and geomagnetic coordinates. This will lead to the publication of a CD-ROM containing a programme designed to be used with an IBM-compatible PC operated with standard software and a written handbook.
