The safety of European nuclear practices during planned outages at nuclear power plants is the subject of an invitation to tender issued by the European Commission DG XI. The current status of these safety practices needs to be examined with a view to proposing a set of recommendations on good nuclear practices and criteria that would improve safety. Furthermore contractors will be expected to analyse how nuclear safety assessment for shut down conditions can improve the case of future plants, with particular emphasis on an improved combination of deterministic and probabilistic methods. The aim would be to achieve a consensus on accepted methods and criteria to cover shutdown conditions in the safety analysis of these plants.
