Northern Ireland wind farm first to achieve ISO environmental certification
B9 Energy, a Northern Ireland-based company which operates and maintains wind farms, has become the first in the world to achieve ISO 14001 certification for environmental management systems in the field of wind energy. The Bessy Bell wind farm, operated by B9 on behalf of PowerGen Renewables, produces electricity for around 5,000 homes, and produces no greenhouse gas CO2 emissions. Opened in 1995, Bessy Bell is just one of a number of wind farms throughout Ireland which B9 is involved in operating or developing. The award of ISO 14001 certification demonstrates the high standard of environmental management in the companies, according to Leslie Murray, chairman of Arena, Northern Ireland's environmental support service.
