Directorate General XI of the European Commission has recently published a reminder to potential applicants for funding for environmental projects that the deadline for submissions of ad hoc proposals is 8 October 1999. DG XI is now urging researchers to send in their proposals before the end of September, to help them to process the applications in plenty of time before the selection committee meets on 13 October. The majority of award decisions should be made before 15 November. The Commission plans to co-finance about 200 projects, allocating another 10 million euro in the last quarter of 1999. Proposals must cover any of the subjects of the Fifth Environmental Action Programme, and relate to DG XI's policy areas. If retained for funding, co-financing grants may be awarded for these 'ad hoc' proposals. According to a source from DG XI, around 25 ad hoc proposals have been received to date, however, it expects to receive four times as many proposals before the closing date for submissions.
