The impact of research projects in industrial technologies funded by the European Union has been analysed in three separate independent evaluations sponsored by the European Commission's DG XII. The results of these studies are presented in the report entitled 'Industrial technologies: impact predicted, impact delivered'. Since 1991, DG XII has sponsored independent evaluations of industrial research projects, providing a five year forecast of their potential. However this year the results have been presented in a slightly different format. Section one, 'Impact delivered', is completely new. Consultants have revisited Brite-Euram projects completed in 1992-93 enabling concrete comparisons of the actual effects with original predictions. In section two, 'Impact predictions', the results of CRAFT projects (cooperative research for SMEs) are available for the first time. This section also includes the sixth Brite-Euram project evaluation, analysing projects at conclusion and forecasting their impact over the next five years. Section three, 'Setting the standards', presents the results of the second and third evaluations of the Standards, Measurements and Testing programme. This survey presents the first published results of projects funded under the SMT programme. These are seen as essential for effective, integrated European industrial technology development. Under the Fifth Framework Programme, SMT activities will be integrated with Brite-Euram activities in the Competitive and Sustainable Growth programme.
