Scientific and technological cooperation with Eastern and Central European countries
The selection of projects which will benefit from Community aid has now been made within the framework of the Community pilot programme for scientific and technological cooperation with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (COPERNICUS). These include 2,531 study scholarships for Eastern researchers, enabling them to spend an average of three months or longer periods in the Community's best research institutes. Launched in 1992 on the initiative of the European Parliament, COPERNICUS constitutes the most important European programme of scientific cooperation and mobility with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. With a 1992 budget of ECU 55 million, the programme met with great interest throughout the scientific community, receiving 11,750 responses to the original call for proposals. The present budget has now been entirely taken up in the selection of a total of 3,039 projects. During the selection process, a large number of the proposals were considered to be of an extremely high level. Many of these will involve the cooperation of research institutions and other bodies from Central and Eastern Europe with projects currently being undertaken within the specific programmes of the Third Framework Programme.
