How to Write a Competitive Proposal for Horizon 2020: Essential tool in securing Horizon 2020 funding
It provides practical advice to researchers and describes the evaluation process. It also provides advice on how to address non-scientific subjects such as project management, European policy making, impact analysis and financial administration. This is the fourth book published by Dr. McCarthy. An earlier book, written for previous European Programme (Framework 7) sold over 3000 copies in 29 countries. Since 1997 Dr. McCarthy has specialised in designing training courses for researchers who are interested in European programmes. The European Commission published a list of the top 100 research organisations and universities that participated in Framework 7. Dr. McCarthy presented his training courses in 48 of these top 100 participants and has also provided training courses in 57 of the top 100 European Universities listed in the Times World Ranking of Universities. Over 45,000 researchers have attended his training courses in 290 different research centres, in 29 countries. Horizon 2020 is the financial instrument implementing the Innovation Union, a Europe 2020 flagship initiative aimed at securing Europe's global competitiveness. Running from 2014 to 2020 with a budget of just over €70 billion, the EU’s new programme for research and innovation is part of the drive to create new growth and jobs in Europe. To obtain funding researchers have to submit proposals. It is estimated that 20,000 projects will be funded during the period 2014 to 2020. Based on previous experience only one in five proposals will receive funding which amounts to an estimated 100,000+ proposal submissions in Europe for Horizon 2020. The book includes an overview of Horizon 2020 and highlights other themes such as: How the Research Priorities were Selected (How to Lobby); The Research Priorities in Horizon 2020; How Proposals are Evaluated; How to Find the Best Partners; How to Write the ‘Implementation' of the project; and Legal and Financial Rules in Horizon 2020 Since 1983 Dr. McCarthy has written over 150 research proposals and has been involved in over 60 European research projects. He also acted as an evaluator of over 200 European proposals in the fields of renewable energy, information technology and innovation. All of the proceeds from the book will go to research and innovation projects which generally involve eight research centres working together over a period of 3 to 5 years.
