Aware of the potential problems the year 2000 may bring, the European Commission has conducted a survey which aims to ensure that it will be able to carry out its tasks efficiently and effectively before, during and after the millennium. The Year 2000 project is aimed at avoiding problems by focussing on three main areas of change. These are technical adaptations as coordinated by the Informatics Directorate, legal issues as coordinated by the legal service, and contingency plans as coordinated by the Secretariat-General. The project follows the Commission communication to Parliament, the Council, the Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions on the topic in February 1998, and is steered by an interdepartmental working party chaired by the Secretariat General. An outline of the changes is available on the Commission's website at: URL: http://europa.eu.int/comm/y2k/preparation/y2k_en.htm(opens in new window)
