EDEFU Project drives European Industry to a cleaner and more competititve horizon.
Brussels, May the 22nd. Manufacturing industries are responsible of nearly 1/3 of the world’s energy consumption and 36% of its CO2 emissions. In this context, the European Union is promoting several initiatives to face the challenge of energy efficiency in this sector. One of these initiatives is EDEFU, an international collaborative project funded by the European Commission, which has developed during its XX years of execution technological advances to improve the energy efficiency of industrial processes from the aluminium, glass, cement and ceramic sectors. The main achievements of this project were presented yesterday in Brussels, being the most relevant the design of a new type of ecological furnace that allows an improvement of the energy efficiency up to 35% of traditional processes, and reduce the CO2 up to 27%. Other solutions brought up by EDEFU and presented yesterday by the project partners are new solutions for energy recovery or new types of refractories materials, which offer improved insulation characteristics. Within these developments other associated factors have been addressed such as the potentials of the results commercialization, as well as the economic feasibility of their implementation, in order to obtain a global vision of the real application for the new ecological furnaces. All these measures together will contribute to reduce production costs and products carbon footprint, not only in the sectors addressed , but also in other related sectors. Therefore, a wide range of industries will benefit from these innovative solutions, resulting in an improvement of their competitiveness. The meeting celebrated yesterday in Brussels was attended by project partners, stakeholders and representatives of European organizations, and was used to present other European initiatives to minimize energy consumption in the industry sector, such as SPIRE, which aims to ensure that EU innovation projects address the right needs and achieve optimal impact.
