The European Commission has selected 60 new projects for the new Connect initiative that was launched in May 1999. The initiative supports projects combining culture with education, training, research and new technologies. The projects chosen will receive a total of 8.3 million euros. Four areas of action were selected. These comprise European citizenship (23 projects receiving 3.8 million euros); exploitation and dissemination of results (3 projects with a budget of 425,000 euros); bridging the gap between education and society and particularly combating violence and failure in schools (31 projects for 4.3 million euros); and organising school competitions in science and new technologies (3 projects for 205,000 euros). The projects chosen involve 720 organisations, and Community funding will finance on average 50% of the project's total budget.
