Finland to introduce an international 'Millennium Award'
The Finnish Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen announced his government is to introduce an international 'Millennium Award', at the European Council meeting in Helsinki on 11 December 1999. The award will recognise a far-sighted technology-based innovation with broad potential impact in promoting quality of life and humane social values. It is intended to become an international award of high prestige, significance and prominence. The value of the award will be one million euros, and will be presented annually by the President of the Republic. The first presentation should take place in 2000. Finland is considered a suitable country to make such an award because of its rapid uptake of the Information Society in recent years.
