The European Commission has recently published an amendment to the recent Council Regulation on the labelling of food produced from genetically modified organisms (see RCN 13820). The amendment is included in response to concerns that some foodstuffs may become accidentally contaminated with genetically modified material. Manufacturers must be able to demonstrate that the presence of genetically modified material in their products is accidental and below a minimum threshold, in order to take advantage of the amendments to the regulations on labelling. The details of this legislation are given in the Official Journal of the European Communities.
