A high level group (HLG) on Strategies for jobs in the Information Society has been established by the European Commission following an agreement reached at the Vienna European Council in 1998. The group will support the Commission by exchanging strategies for the Information Society among Member State representatives. It widens the perspective from creating job opportunities to assessing job strategies, building on successful initiatives in Member States and dealing with specific challenges for learning and working in the Information Society, both in the public and private sectors. Its fourth meeting mainly focused on a discussion of the draft progress report on the rapidly changing Information Society in Europe. The report, which was prepared by the Employment Directorate-General in cooperation with DGs for Enterprise and the Information Society, and Education and Culture, proposes recommendations to Member States and social partners.
