The European Commission's Information Society Directorate-General has recently published a report on a consultation meeting on 'Sustainable workplaces in a global Information Society'. The meeting was organised in collaboration with the Research Directorate-General to consult the wider industrial and research community on actions in the revised work programme that address future research requirements for sustainable workplaces. The participants concluded that developments in new work environments must not only be limited to improvements in business efficiency and effectiveness and in human and social aspects. 'They should also take into consideration the materials and energy consumption and the wider societal and environmental consequences that these new workplaces and working practices bring with them', the authors report.
