The annual report of the JET (Joint European Torus) programme for the year leading up to September 1999 has been published. Divided into two main sections, it deals with both the technical side of the programme and how it is being administered. It also clearly sets out how the programme stands within the Euratom programme. The main advance in the period covered by the report was the successful exchange of the Mark IIA divertor target structure for the Gas Box divertor, without manned intervention. The JET joint undertaking reached its twentieth year of operations during the same period, having been established in June 1978.It was also extended, with the Council of the European Union approving an amendment to allow the Austrian Academy of Sciences to become a member of the JET joint undertaking. The programme was extended to the end of 1999, to allow it to carry out support programme for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER).
