Guidelines for water resources development cooperation
The European Commission's latest guidelines for 'water resource development cooperation', setting out a strategic approach towards sustainable water resources management, are now available on the Web from: URL: http://europa.eu.int/comm/development/sector/intro_en.htm(opens in new window) 'The production of this set of guidelines illustrates the European Commission's own heightened sense of concern and sets out a practical method for translating concern into action' says the Environment Directorate-General. The guidelines set out a strategic approach for the planning and management of water related activities, from national policy making through the implementation of programme's projects and subsequent operations. 'It involves a radical change in traditional attitudes towards water management, and the introduction of good practice consistent with core principles agreed at a series of meetings held under national, regional and UN auspices during recent years', the Environment DG explains. The guidelines should be of interest not only to EU officials, but also to decision makers in government, non-governmental organisations, the private sector and international organisations.
