Future presidencies of the European Community should institute informal meetings between politicians and the research community on at least an annual basis, claimed the Portuguese Minister of Science and Technology, José Mariano Gago, at the beginning of the second day of the informal Lisbon Summit. A continual exchange of ideas between the two sides was essential, he said as the 'European Science beyond 2000' conference began in Lisbon on Tuesday 7 March. The informal summit has been designed to provide input on a European strategy for the development of science and technology. Mr Gago claimed that this type of meeting, which was carried out in 'an informal and discursive' environment, was the best way to maintain contact. Today's events should take in the opinions of both the selection of Nobel science prize winners invited, as well as a number of European research agencies.
