Researchers will shortly have the opportunity to participate in a variety of studies in pilot areas for the Joint Research Centre's (JRC) project in population dynamics and security. 'Security' in this context relates to the process in which economics, trade, transport, energy, agriculture, industry and all other policies are designed to achieve economically, socially and environmentally sustainable development. The Joint Research Centre will therefore shortly call for tenders for studies in the following areas: - Future and/or applicant Member States (EU enlargement policy); - Regions subject to international trade treaties and development and cooperation policy of the EU; - Areas subject to humanitarian aid from the EU; - Areas subject to environment international treaties signed by the EU; - Areas subject to threats for citizens' health because of environmental degradation. The focus is on the analysis of environmental dynamics in a broad range of situations, such as urban growth, trans-borders interchange and pressure, set up (or decline) of infrastructures for transport and energy, regional disparities and population migrations. The final goal of the work will be to evaluate the impact of EU policies on the population within and outside of the EU's borders. This work should also contribute to EU's objectives of aid and socio-economic development. The work will be supervised by the Strategy and Systems for Space Applications unit of the JRC's Space Applications Institute.
