The European Commission has announced its intention to call for tenders for assistance with identifying sources of pollutants in water and, at the same time, propose measures to prevent water pollution. The selected priority substances in the 'Water Framework Directive' will be subject to emission controls that have to be proposed by the Commission within two years. The contractor will identify the sources of pollutants in water and propose cost effective measures to reduce these emissions. The outcome of the study will provide the Commission with the basis for a proposal of emission controls under the future Water Framework Directive. In addition, water quality objectives will be elaborated in a separate but parallel study, to fulfil the 'combined approach' set out in the proposed directive.
