A set of guidelines including specific recommendations for the application of the EU Directive on basic safety standards for protection from ionising radiation is now available on-line from: http://europa.eu.int/comm/environment/radprot/116/116.htm(opens in new window) The guidelines are not binding on Member States but form part of a number of technical guides drawn up to help implement the EU Medical Exposure Directive. The document includes a general introduction providing background information on required levels of training in radiation protection. This is followed by general recommendations for training programmes in radiation protection and establishing credentials in radiation protection. Other chapters give recommendations to protect patients during training programmes in health centres and recommendations for continuing education and training after qualification and when new techniques are implemented. Recommendations for introducing courses on radiation protection to the basic curriculum of medical and dental schools is also given.
