European Parliament sitting of 24 to 28 May, 1993
The following RTD-related topics were among subjects tabled for discussion during the European Parliament sitting in Strasbourg from 24 to 28 May 1993: - Satellites and telecommunications equipment; - Technical standards; - Computer hackers; - Statistics; - Food additives; - European medicines agency; - SAVE and ALTENER; - Higher education. The preliminary draft of the 1994 budget was table for presentation by the Commission at ECU 73 billion in commitments and ECU 70 billion in payments. The following headings are included under the budget for internal policies: - Research (ECU 2.553 million); - Agriculture including disease eradication, anti-fraud and forestry(ECU 205.8 million); - Regional programmes (ECU 31 million); - Transport (ECU 13 million); - Fisheries (ECU 25.6 million); - Education and training (ECU 281 million); - Information and culture, including the Media audiovisual programme (ECU 105.3 million); - Health and safety (ECU 143 million); - Energy (ECU 202.2 million); - Nuclear safeguards (ECU 19.5 million); - Environmental policy (ECU 111.5 million); - Information technology and internal market (ECU 218 million); - Trans-European networks (ECU 310 million). The proposed freeze on research spending is expected to be a point of contention in Parliamentary discussions.
